Re Sparking Plugs. X601

Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} 18-11-14.

With reference to Mr Johnson's memo J5/IW171114, we wish to state that we recently made some fairly extensive tests of the Lodge Sparking Plugs. These plugs are practically a copy of the Bosch, they use the same kind of porcelain for the insulator and the same method of fixing the insulator into the plug body.

There is also a waterproof model which has a neat looking ebonite cover so that there is no bare connection, thus providing a terminal at the plug end of the wire, similar to the terminal on the distributor.

When Mr Hives made his recent 10,000 mile/bench test he ran the first 5000 miles on Bosch Plugs without any trouble and the second 5,000 on Lodge Plugs; these gave no trouble but on examination at the completion of the trial 2 insulators were cracked inside the plug.

On July 16th Mr Hives issued a report recommending Lodge Plugs for standardisation, they having then done 10,000 miles on 7CA and 5000 miles on 58NA{Mr Nadin} in addition to the bench test. He stated that they will stand a reasonable amount of oil
