STRIP REPORT OF ELECTRICAL UNITS TAKEN OFF 26.G.VI AFTER ENDURANCE RUN OF 41,000 MILES.

Dynamo (To LOP's DW.201; 250; 252 and D.54093).

This machine failed as the result of slackness and end play in the bearings; the outer ring of the bearing turning and wearing the housing. A paste which appeared to be made up of aluminium powder and oil was, on being analysed, found to be made up of steel powder and oil. This paste had blocked up the oil hole from lubricator to bearing. Marks were apparent where the fan had fouled the end bracket, due to end play. Wear of the brushes and commutator, although rather heavy, was about normal for this type of machine. Work on an improved type of dynamo is in hand.

Regulator and Cutout (R.R. Scheme 896) LOP. DW.392.

No trouble was experienced with this unit, and its condition when examined, was satisfactory.

Distributor Board (LOP. DW.457).

On examination the fuse carrier and clip of the armature fuse showed signs of having been over-heated. This may have been due to the carrier working partly out of the clip, and so running with a reduced area of contact, or to the small mass of the clip; in either case, we think that a thicker gauge of metal should be used, which will provide both increased pressure and a greater cooling effect.

Cables and Wiring.

Although the cables were rather dirty, they were, generally, in a sound condition with the exception that a short circuit occurred on the headlamp wire, due to being trapped on the suspension where the headlamp cable enters the radiator. A new scheme has now been issued in which the cable is carried by a flexible conduit.
