RECEIVED 13 AUG 1926 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} There is no proposal that I am aware of at the moment to make modifications on New PhantomCodename for PHANTOM I steerings, other than those already arranged for, and of which you are aware, by which BJ. instructed that we should produce 60 sets of modified steering parts to be applied to cars which were going abroad. It was definitely decided that the only cars which we were to treat specially were those going abroad, and which were therefore likely to encounter extreme conditions of high speeds on rough roads which obtain in Continental touring. In regard to customers' complaints, the numbers of parts ordered were intended to cover all cars that at that time were undelivered but were intended for the Continent, with a margin of some 15 or 20 to deal with customers' complaints as they arose. If it is felt that anything further than this is necessary, then unquestionably the matter should be raised again with the Administration, as even in the case of customers' complaints, the impression I obtained was that it would probably be quite possible to satisfy customers who complained by the addition of lighter springs in the side steering tube only, that is, so far as complaints in this country are concerned. For complaints abroad, a new worm and nut with lighter springs was considered to be the remedy, with the addition of stays on the steering column to control the column more definitely against ordinary vibrations set up by rough roads in a vertical direction, as distinct from the forces that the worm and nut and light side springs were intended to cover.
