Attached sketch may make this clearer. I do not consider that inertia shocks can be said to improve the ride (and I know you will agree that few shock absorbers do). They do enable a light main setting to be used with slight orifice, while avoiding the danger of this sort of setting namely the unexpected "throw" over a long road-wave met in the dark at high speed. 4.
