- 4 - Vacuum Mobiloil A of the latest type and Bijur Oil No. 130 appear most suitable. Particulars of the new MobiloilA, old Mobiloil A (not so suitable) and the three Bijur oils, and description of the "bottle" test are attached. Since Mobiloil A is what we use most of the year in the engines, it is convenient to us to use it in the Bijur system. The Bijur tank will use oil of almost any viscosity which will flow at all as it "falls" into the pump through the big inlet valve. If the oil is solid it will not work in the gravity feeds beyond the drip plugs in such parts as the front pivots. (By the way - although we do not "prime" the pressure system, we take pains to prime the gravity feeds beyond drip plugs, so that these do not have to wait several weeks before beginning to discharge oil at the further ends.) (7) I have given above the approx. variation in drip plug discharge rates. (8) Failure of drip plugs. As explained in my earlier note (OY2 Feb.1) the only case of plugged drip plugs is on the water pump. We are now trying the fitting shown in attached print, B-1920, which should serve to delay or prevent the passage of water to the non-return valve of the drip plug. We have no failure of the brass cap such as you describe. In fact we have no drip plug troubles except:- - On earlier ones locking of the valve by considerable overtightening of the taper thread. Dirt in drip plugs as delivered. Failure of the silk facing on the valve due to water. (9) Banjo Connections. We can remake a banjo connection any number of times if the aluminum washer is put on the same way round each time and if the hexagon "print" of the head in the top of the washer is brought into proper relation to the head. We reface the banjos with a hand-cutter after brazing to the pipe. -continued- | ||
