25th April, 1936. Accident to 22-G-V.{VIENNA} J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} Dixon & K.{Mr Kilner} Scholes on car - K.{Mr Kilner} Scholes driving. I was driving the car from the garage to the petrol station, proceeding in the direction of Argenton and Lomoges. Was overtaking a stationary van just before the turning up to Tours and Blois road. I noticed a van coming from the direction of Tours. I was on the correct side of the road and was travelling at no more than 20 M.P.H. The van driver was cutting the corner on the wrong side of the road, and did not leave me any room to pull in. I braked heavily, bringing the car almost to a standstill, parallel with the road turning up to Tours and Blois. At the same time the van driver swerved in front of me towards his correct side of the road again. The van was going too fast to stop in time. I pulled the steering to the left to get furtheraway from the van as I came to rest. In English terms, the van's offside front dumb iron hit our offside front wheel at approx. 80°. The front of our car was pushed sideways 18" in the direction the van was taking. After the cars were moved, the wheel marks of our car could be seen clearly for 9 ft. There were no marks of braking at all to be found on the road where the van had been. Our car was driven back to the garage again. The front end of the car was stripped down and it was found that the front axle was bent. The hub and brake gear showed no signs of being strained. (Sgd.)
