CHRYSLER CRANKSHAFT.

The attached sketch shews the Chrysler crankshaft - tests to determine its stiffness and inertia are being done and will be reported on shortly.

We note that the radiusing of the webs at the outer extremities is not carried as far as on the S.S. shaft. We recently twisted the S.S. shaft and it appeared only 9% stiffer than the late standard Phantom (E.75216) whereas it should be 33% stiffer. We believe this discrepancy is largely due to the weakening effect of the radius on the webs, in that it provides a poor base for the pin to root in. The web is stiff enough at the journal end, but rather weakened at the pin end. This appearance is more noticeable when looking at the finished shaft than when looking at the drawing. We shall shortly be confirming this important point by twisting a shaft before and after these flats are machined. Meanwhile we think it probable that the S.S. shaft is actually weaker torsionally than the present Phantom E.77495.

The fillets used on the Chrysler are only 1/16" as against 1/8" used on our shaft. This should give 1/8" wider bearings. The shaft also has solid pins and journals which appears to be usual American practice.

Road tests will shortly be done on the Chry and without counterweights - also with only four main b fitted instead of six, to determine if the c'shaft is m liable to vibration when unsupported by the very stiff
