ORIGINAL TO RY. } FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} ~~HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}~~ } ~~DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}~~ } S E C R E T. R1/M7.3.24. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} A.{Mr Adams} C. re. STEERING TROUBLES. ~~X9430~~ ~~X9430~~ HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} does not find that the increased lean of pivots (transverse) makes any noticeable difference. There are disadvantages such as increased tendency to take charge round a corner, effect of out of balance road wheels, and probably others. I thank Mr. Bailey for his suggestions of the difference between braking and tractive efforts due to soft road. So far I cannot see that there is any reason for shocks with centre-point steering, except my old points of - (1) Bad geometry. (2) Oblique shocks, (sides of potholes, ruts, etc.) The other forces ought to be very small. After we get ample clearance and the best possible buffer springs in the longitudinal tube, and since we have done away with the bad geometry, we ought to be OK. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
