BINDING OF PROPELLER SHAFT SPLINES.

We have been carrying out some tests at R's request, on the binding of the propeller shaft splines. The figures have shewn that when the axle goes up and down, with the engine transmitting full engine gear torque, the splines bind up and push the engine, with a load no less than 400 lbs.

We think that this may be one of the reasons why we have had failures of the thrust, and that it is at present, causing trouble with the engine mounting.

R.{Sir Henry Royce} has asked us to try splines made in the existing manner, with very careful bedding, all corners being radiussed, and also similar splines nitro- or case hardened, and lapped in.

Will you, therefore, supply W.Bell with two splined portions treated in the suggested manner. We appreciate that there are no hardened splines on the car at present, and therefore should like to know what you think of them as a production proposition.
