SECRET.

JAPAN 3. OIL PUMP AND DISTRIBUTOR DRIVE RELIEF VALVE.

We had hoped to avoid the main oil pipe but I assume this was found to be impossible.

Otherwise everything appears as good as we know how.

Much of the previous Japan work has been found useful.

There is little doubt that this will make a fine engine but the reduction in cost will have to come from the Works. We cannot rely on doing more than 10%.

There should however be much saving in getting lasting satisfaction without so much changing of parts and testing troubles.

Can we arrange to get some of the preliminary testing done with single ignition of the present pattern, or are we relying on adapting the present to this double tower? I think the scheme is right.

I hope the work is moving quickly.

Mr. Bailey will I hope, with HY.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} and RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}, criticize ruthlessly anything they see which is difficult to make. There is much in convenient pieces to machine. We do our best but cannot see everything that is possible.

Stir me up if I am stopping the work.

R.{Sir Henry Royce}
