The inlet valves have remained in a good condition, no appreciable wear can be measured on the stems. The exhaust valves as previously reported have deteriorated by the effect of the loss of clearance. The inner edge of the seating has been rounded off. On No.11 exhaust valve the stem had worn .006" on the dia, where the asbestos packing comes on contact. The rocking of the valve in its seat appears to be the cause. This valve also produced a squeak towards the finish of the test. The lubrication of the valve stems appeared to be sufficient there was an excess of carbon on the underside of all the inlet valves. Tests taken after each 250 miles run did not show any signs of overoiling that would indicate the state of the valves. The asbestos packings were still in a sound condition, a great improvement over the felt packings. The valve springs have remained quiet no flaws or breakages have occurred. There are definite signs of the springs having revolved at a high speed as the top and bottom coils are highly polished. The washers also showing the same condition. The exhaust valve guides had opened out at the valve end from .003" to .006" on the dia., for a depth of approx. .750" making the guides taper. The spinning of the valves along with the springs and the condition of the seatings would cause the wear. The inlet guides showed no appreciable wear.

ROCKER SHAFT to E.51494.
ROCKERS E.54159/60.

The rockers have given no trouble. They are in a good condition. They have remained quiet throughout the mileage. No appreciable wear can be measured in any of the bearings. The lubrication has been ample. The rocker shaft and pedestals are in good condition. The spherical ends of the pushrods show full bearing surfaces without any defects.

TAPPETS to E.55337. CAMSHAFT to LOP. E.54371. CAMSHAFT E.54115 ( 110° angle. )

The condition of the tappets are very good. No wear can be detected in any of the roller bearings. The surfaces of the rollers for the mileage run show very little wear, there are slight lines worn in the direction of rotation. The guides and stems of the tappets are in a very good condition. The springs have not taken up any permanent set and no flaws can be detected. The camshaft and bearings were in a very good condition.
