HPS {Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr} /EW.1/CB.24.2.39.

Pistons. LOP.EB.2833.

All the pistons have been chalk tested and with the exception of No.3, are free from cracks. No.3 piston is cracked on three of the inner ribs, .300" above the gudgeon pin bores, the cracks extending approximately .200" from the inner edge of the ribs.

Apart from these cracks and several minor scores at the lower end of the piston skirts, the general condition of both pistons and rings is satisfactory. The gudgeon pins have been magnetically tested and are free from cracks.

Cylinder Head. LOP.EB.4007.

The cylinder head which has not completed the full 50 hours endurance with this unit was in good condition.

Apart from rather heavy "plucking" in the bores of the Vandervell split type bushes, the condition of the rocker mechanism was satisfactory.

Valves & Fittings. LOP.EB.3996.

The valves have been acid tested for cracks and except for local pitting generally on the heads, and slight roughness on the tips of Nos. 3 & 4 inlet valves, are in satisfactory condition.

The inlet valve top washers are worn on the spring seatings and several are burred at the outer edge of the inner seating.

One inner inlet valve spring (E.36864 - Phantom III type) is broken at the second coil from the bottom as shown on the accompanying photograph.

Several exhaust valve springs are bedding locally on the washer seatings; we suggest these be lapped on the end faces before refitting.

Camshaft & Fittings. LOP.EB.4026.

Apart from rather heavy "plucking" on the inlet cams, the condition of the camshaft is generally satisfactory.

The Vandervell split type bearings are slightly scored in the bore, but show very little sign of actual wear.

Four inlet tappets have picked up slightly on the cam facings; This, apparently, is due to the extra load imposed by the Phantom III type inlet valve springs. The condition of the tappets is otherwise satisfactory.

continued.
