| -3- Rm {William Robotham - Chief Engineer} /GB.4/JH.8.6.40. This shaft was 2" dia. 48 1/2" long between centres and 0.065" thick. This gives a Hardy Spicer speed of 4360 r.p.m. and 4650 r.p.m. by Mechanics formula. The Mechanics formula is not given but he mentions that it is 85% of theoretical. In this note Olley has stressed the need for reducing end play in the trunnions, this has been reduced from .006" to .004" on Pontiac with a consequent reduction in rejects of from 17%(and returning 20% for rebalance) to 3 or 4%. Another suggestion was to put an engine and axle on trestles with a prop. shaft between and do some testing of angles and noise away from the car.
