The third day we encountered the Stelvio. The length is recorded as being 11.25 miles, but our speedometer which was as near correct as possible registered 12.4 miles. We were balked by a motor cycle combination, also a stray cow. The time allowed was 31 mins 46 secs. for an average speed of 21.12 mph. The time taken by Mr.Pass was 34 min. 14 secs. He had to reverse on the climb 26 times, eleven of these were on left hand corners. The turning circle for left hand is 48 ft. 6 ins. We calculated that a turning circle of not more than 45 ft. is the maximum that the bends could be taken without reversing, with a wheelbase of 10 ft 6 ins.

It will be seen that near the top there are 4 corners where the distance between the corners are so short that after reversing the 1st. gear could only be used. Upon descending the Pass 6 reverses only were necessary, one on left hand corner.

Stelvio Pass. Height (m 2759) Highest speed 40 mph.
