Bentley Rear Axle Pinion Thrust.

It is agreed that the Ransome and Marles rear axle pinion thrust race overcomes the failure of the race and is the only scheme we can use at the moment for the Bentley, but it has not got an absolutely clean certificate so far as we understand as the bronze cage was found broken on the first test and the steel cage which was tried as an alternative was found worn, leading to the decision to standardize the cage in bronze.

We therefore propose to continue testing the Hoffmann scheme in which the bevel pinion is carried in two roller bearings and the thrust is dealt with independently by a Schatz type bearing, as this scheme is better in principle than the Ransome and Marles. Mr Bailey is satisfied that the picking up which occurred in the Schatz bearing on the non thrust side when the Hoffmann scheme was tested can be explained by the bearing not having sufficient clearance.

The later reports on the behaviour of the Hoffmann scheme are encouraging and it is hoped to get a more conclusive comparison between it and the Marles, and if the results justify it we should propose putting the Hoffmann scheme on the next 10,000 mile Bentley.
