Visit to Glasgow re Subcontract Procedure.

On Wednesday and Thursday of this week I visited Glasgow to discuss with Ryc., Farmer & Barman the fortnightly letter, stock report, new order form and record cards that we have developed to assist subcontract deliveries.

Glasgow accepted the idea for immediate trial on certain subcontractors. Farmer and I visited Graigs (machining supercharger cases) and Atlantics (making a dozen small pieces) to see the reaction of their managers to the new scheme. Neither raised any objections.

It was apparent from the Glasgow records that all the orders to these two firms were a long way behind schedule, so far in fact that it would be hopeless to start the new procedure on the existing delivery schedule as it would only show that the whole order was overdue.

It was therefore arranged that Glasgow should issue a new delivery schedule to be agreed on by the subcontractor and our outside engineer and then send the report letter based on that schedule.

It was further agreed that when future orders go to subcontractors the delivery schedule should first be initialed by the Glasgow outside engineer, as being within the capabilities of the firm. Such an arrangement would not be amiss at Derby and Crewe as a delivery schedule based on engine output and hope does not produce finished parts.

Everyone at Glasgow voted for sending the report letter once a month and not once a fortnight. This will be done.
The material stock report caused no trouble at the two firms visited who even agreed to segregate material against separate order numbers. Glasgow would have to do this in any case. Getting the subcontractor to do so also necessitates an extra column on the stock report.
