Mr. Rowledge states that a simple and reliable precaution in use in some factories against soft skin on hardened parts is to have an excess of gas present in the furnace so that it burns with a yellow flame at the flue outside of the furnace. I would like Mr. Rowledge to have a talk with Mr. Wormald in respect to this point, as Mr. Wormald would apply anything that was likely to be of use in making the avoidance of decarbonisation more certain and easy, which, I always fear, I often find on anybody's hardening.
