The proposed Bentley 111 frame was discussed by Rm {William Robotham - Chief Engineer} /Les. with the Projectile people, and certain suggestions made by them to improve or facilitate the construction. These are indicated on the accompanying blueprints, and we should be glad if you would incorporate most of them on the frame drawings, so that HPS. {Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr} may be able to build the first frame to give the maximum rigidity. The prints are :- FB.2937/8 N.Sch. 5766 Lec. 5769 Lec. 5770 (2 Sheets) FB.2937/8. A modification is shewn to the width of the flange on the rear upsweep to facilitate the pressing, together with an additional bracing member, which we think we cannot incorporate on the existing frame, but we should make a record of it, in case Thompsons should run into the anticipated trouble and require assistance. LeC.5769. shews the same proposal, and in addition a modification reducing the number of rivets to four per end and adding some welding on the edges. We think the reduced number of rivets and the welding should be added to the existing drawings. LeC.5770. sheet 2. shews a modification to the radii at the centre of the cross channel member to provide a margin to prevent interference with one another in assembly, though this may not be done on the first frame we think it should be added to the drawings for future frames. There is also shewn the elimination of all the rivets except one at each corner, top and bottom, and the introduction of reduced gussets and welding, instead. We think this should also be added to present drawings. Whether we can add the welded end plates also indicated will have to be investigated. There is also shewn a modification to the end of the front gusset, substitution of welding for rivets and staggering of the holes in the frame web for attachment of the cross channel member. | ||
