Re Chassis 57-S-6. Fuller.

The above car was brought to us on the 23rd.ult., and the owner complained of bad knocks in the engine.

We tested the car, in company with the driver, and found very bad bearing knocks.

The engine was dismantled and we found that all the big end and main bearings were exceedingly slack. These we let up as necessary.

There was no evidence of any lack of lubrication or anything which would account for this extreme slackness.

The owner stated the car had run 12,000 miles in all, and it had run approximately 1,000 since the engine was decarbonized.

When we re-erected the engine and tested the car on the road, we found the bearing knocks had been quite cured, but there was one mysterious knock left in the engine, which, of course, had not previously been audible owing to the heavy bearing knocks which existed. We traced this latter knock to the flywheel which was found to be loose on the crankshaft. We, therefore, removed the gearbox and clutch and tightened up the flywheels bolts. This successfully cured the mysterious knock described above.

The total cost of the above mentioned work is £ 7. 6. 9d. and this owner will not expect any charge for same, and considering the total mileage run, we do not think we can justify attempting to debit the job to the owner.
