YOUR REF: Rm {William Robotham - Chief Engineer} /Les.11/ap. Experimental Department, Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd., DERBY. 22nd January, 1937. For Mr. Leslie's attention. Dear Mr. Leslie, I thank you for your letter of the 21st instant. I am glad to hear that the noise on the small valves is less. It may be, if this valve was set to its normal resistance, that it would be quiet. We are, of course, arranging to use your type of valve in the shock absorbers we are making up for you, and this should be quiet. I note your remarks regarding valve dampers and levers. The material that the casings are made from is "Mazak" No.5. If Mr. Elliott thinks that No.3 will give sufficiently satisfactory results would it be as well to have the castings made up in that instead of aluminium as previously suggested ? They will, of course, be sand castings at the beginning, and I am not sure it is a suitable sand casting metal. I regret that the oil has not been sent off to you sooner but it is being dispatched today by passenger train, and should be at your Works by the time you receive this letter. We are also sending you half-a-dozen spare washers for the bottom adjusting nut, as apparently one of these is faulty. Up to the time of writing we have not had any signs of leaks from the disc at the end of the shaft, and I am somewhat surprised to note that one of yours is leaking, as we have looked on this as a very satisfactory sealing design. Regarding the small plug in the transfer passage, this again we have found quite satisfactory but we will be quite prepared to screw plugs in for you as suggested. The hours on your tests are certainly getting up and we are very glad to have the results of these. Yours sincerely, Gordon Armstrong | ||
