X.4209 RE. SUGGESTED IMPROVED ROLLER PLATE FOR REAR AXLE SPRING SUPPORTS.

With reference to the trouble experienced with a knock in back axle spring rests due to side play of the rear springs, as brought to your notice some time ago with cars on test, and which was again brought forward and discussed at Works Committee Conference on November 15th.. - see item H on page (2) of the Minutes - we learn from the Experimental Dept. that the standardisation sheet for the improved roller plate to overcome this trouble is held up by C.J. pending more exhaustive tests.

We wish to bring to your notice, however, that we are now receiving a number of complaints from customers of this noise, and, as demonstrated to you, there is no way of curing this fault other than by alteration to our present standard, and the only cure we know of at present is the incorporation of wider wearing plates as recommended by Mr. Hives.

We are of the opinion that this is a case where, to overcome actual complaints from customers, we should endeavour to obtain permission to make a small number of these wearing plates for fitting in special cases of complaints, pending the standardisation, as we cannot conceive there is anything about these new fittings which can cause any serious or vital complication.

We have asked Hr to call a Works Conference to discuss this matter.
