The first is that the lowest bell crank of the hand brake ratchet release mechanism is exposed to mud and water and we have had two or three cases of seizure. The bell crank can be freed by oiling it and working it about. We are making a sheet metal screen to protect it to some extent. There is a sheet metal bracket immediately in front of the lever which might well be extended to form a screen. The second is that occasionally the hand brake lever lifts and then drops when the brake pedal is depressed. The result is a click. Although we say that this trouble does not occur when the brakes are freely and correctly set, it is just the sort of complaint which arises in service and we think a spring attached to some part of the lever to hold it down with a load of 3 - 4 lbs. measured at the hand grip would eliminate the trouble in advance. We are fitting a spring to one of our cars. We have found a spring of this type essential on Bentley IIA; it is already fitted to C.B.IV. With this latest spring we have now asked for 4 additional external pull off springs to overcome various troubles but we are reducing the internal springs by the same number. We think schemes should be prepared showing this screen and pull off spring. Rm {William Robotham - Chief Engineer} /APM. | ||
