X.2209 Re Multi Ring Pistons X.2959

I ometted to add in my report EH2/AT15.6.17 that although there was no trouble with over oiling after the Lodge plugs had been fitted. The appearance of the plugs when examined was oily. You will appreciate that it is a most difficult thing to obtain a definite test to show the difference between the standard and the Multi Ring Pistons for keeping back the oil. The engine at Hendon proved that Multi-Ring Pistons will not overcome all the troubles of overoiling. From experience it appears as though we cannot reproduce the conditions obtained in the air, we get engines oiling up in the air which we have not been able to make oil up on the bench, even though we run light loads for a long time. We have got a move which we tested some years ago on the car. At that time we found it was an improvement but we did not consider it practical. The idea is to bevel off the bottom portion of the scraper ring. You will remember we saw that the Hispano had a similar ring. X.2246.

Lately, Mr. Platford has had 2 or 3 cars in for repairs which have been over oiling, he has tried this scheme on one and was quite satisfied, it was an improvement and they were sent away. He also had tried this on some of the series on Aero engines with the original pistons and he reports that he has been able to cut the oil consumption down from 10 to 11 pts. per hour to 3 or 4. Of course on our standard new engines we cannot afford to cut the oil down at all.
