that we advise the use of shims to locate the bushes, rather than dowel pins, as in the case of Albions pressure of the bearing against the dowel pin had caused local thickening of the bearing, and this material had dragged away from the surface causing partial seizure.

The points regarding AC.9 manufacture which were discussed at Rolls are as follows, and Rolls are writing us on these points.

1. Details of RR. methods of manufacture. Composition of alloying elements etc. Melting conditions.

2. Exact chemical composition arrived at and results obtained on production melts.

3. What Magnesium is lost on remelting and is this consistent.

4. Hardness of production bearings. Variation of hardness in bearing. What percentage of bearings are hardness tested. Position of hardness tests on bearing.

5. Has segregation in actual bearing been checked. How is normal analysis sample taken.

6. What size melt is produced.

7. Heat Treatment. What type of furnace is used and what temperatures, and time employed.

8. Fluxing - effect on Magnesium content.

9. Dies - types, flanges etc.
