25-EX.

We have held the car up these last three days to attend to and fit the following parts. New steering column complete, rubber packing taken out and solid packing fitted. New torque reaction centre plates fitted with square holes for locating the plates. Clutch dismantled and examined, rear shock dampers taken down and examined. New radiator mounting fitted.

Considerable time was taken up in making new packing plates to replace the rubber, for holding the steering box to the frame. The steering is very tight and will take some time to free. We will give you a report upon the steering tomorrow as we first of all wish it to settle down.

The fitting of the torque reaction dampers was a toughish job. We had great difficulty in getting the old brackets off the tube, the brazing being excessively good. We are afraid that the tube received a little damage in so doing. We have, however, fitted the split brackets, pegged same, and fitted the new centre plates. We have received your telegram this afternoon re. query re. the centre hole. We had however tackled this matter and we send you a sketch of what we have done. To make it clear, we fitted the plates, then scribed an arc that the engine takes, and elongated the hole three diameters along this arc leaving approx. .010" each side of bolt for clearance. We found upon dismantling the old plates that the same feature of bulging of the plates had taken place, also the anchorage holes had become elongated by chattering.

We dismantled the gearbox and clutch to ascertain two features, first whether there was sufficient oil getting to the clutch spigot by the automatic oiling scheme, which has been reduced in conjunction with Rx's statement that overoiling was taking place. We find that we have gone too far and that practically no oil is reaching the clutch spigot, although on test they still argued that they were getting too much. We shall have to deal further with this matter when I return to Derby. H. {Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} Smith can give details of this if you wish to know them.

We have also had a very bad oil leak from the front end of the gearbox. So much that the fabric coupling had become saturated and started to disintegrate. We therefore
