SPECTRE(Codename for Phantom III) & J. {Mr Johnson W.M.} III. CYLINDER DISTORTION TESTS.

Dimensions of Cylinder bores taken with hot and cold water in jackets - Hot water at 80°C. Cold water at 20°C.

SPECTRE(Codename for Phantom III) NO. 2. UNIT - CENTRICAST IRON LINERS

From the dimensions of cylinder liners measured in position under the conditions stated, it was observed that although the liners expanded to some extent at all points when heated, most of the expansion took place above and below the gland rubbers, the crowns shewing the greatest variation.

The glands, having a restraining effect on the liner, help to keep the bore to the normal size at that point. It is also noticeable that the bores become oval at and above the glands when hot, the ovality being .0005" average, with the maximum dia. at right angles to the Crankshaft.
