Re. 19-EX.

Replying to Cx. {Major Len W. Cox - Advertising Manager} 11/KW.14.3.33.

The original tests on the semi-expanding carburetter were run on 19-EX. This car ran 10,000 miles in France and was run by PN. {Mr Northey} and Bn. {W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington} The carburetter was standardised in the form that it was run in France. We after that fitted a similar carburetter to Sg {Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} 's. car 58-GN. This car ran for several months with the usual silencer on the carburetter which was similar to that we now use on production.

19-EX. car when it was sent to London in November was fitted with a resonance type air silencer. When 19-EX. car ran in France this silencer was removed and the standard one fitted. 19-EX. car was sent to London with a resonance type silencer on 12.11.32.

The silencer fitted to 58-GN. and 19-EX. was made up from experimental drawings. We have only just completed the first air silencer made to the final design. We do not expect any improvement in this as regards silencing over the experimental one.

We are fully aware that the air silencer to the carburetter is the greatest improvement we have made to the R.R. car for a considerable time and we have been pushing for the instruction of it even though it has not run a 10,000 miles test which, for this particular feature, we think would be quite unnecessary.
