| W/S {Derby Works / Sales} H. {Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} c. Sgn c. Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} X4117. EP {G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} 12/H31.1.30. re. 6-WJ. Mrs. Kruse. Springing. With reference to your H14/LH {Mr Haworth} 29.1.30. we are pleased to hear that Capt. Kruse's complaint re springing of 23-WJ is evidently overcome. JLE. {J. Lee Evans - Chassis Test Manager} brought this to our attention in London, and alterations had to be made as reported, it being dealt with as a special case. With this continual redistribution of weight and cars being specially required for high speed use, satisfactory springing is going to be impracticable. There will be too many "special cars". A special "ramp" should be made on Coachbuilders and agents to maintain the recommended weight distribution. If possible the point should be made clear on the specification for the chassis when new so that the best springing compromise can be arranged. The same applies for light high speed cars. As regards 6-WJ, having settled the weight distribution (as near as possible to our recommendations) we suggest the car be returned to the Works for the springing to be dealt with on its merits. Please arrange for the instructions to be sent through in the usual official way - copy to EP. {G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} so that it will have special attention. It may help us to adopt a policy re special springing. it would appear that we shall have several similar cases. 6-WJ and 23-WJ seem two extremes, 6-WJ. according to the clearances reported, is certainly wrong as it is.
