| HL/EJW. 622 Rm {William Robotham - Chief Engineer} /Wym. {G. Harold Whyman - Experimental Manager} 10/JH.27.6.38. We are continually being defeated in our efforts to use Mild Steel for our exhaust system due to either break - age or oxidation of the pipes after anything over 5000 or 6000 miles. I am therefore sending you a sample pipe for examination. This particular pipe has run exactly 7500 miles on Sg {Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} 's. car, and we should say that it has had very fair and careful treatment because Sg. {Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} is not a fast driver. If you can find the reason for the failure of this pipe, you may be able to suggest some form of treatment to the Mild Steel or an alternative material that will not be as expensive as Staybright, but will have similar lasting qualities.
