| C O P Y. X 1782 To Wor. {Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} for EH. from R. {Sir Henry Royce} R8/B6116. Copy to J. {Mr Johnson W.M.} January 6th. 1916. Handwritten notes: <- 8116 (above 'for EH'), 1782 (top right corner) X.2125 Re Weston Instrument. X.1782 With reference to the small Weston instrument being insufficiently dead beat, this would imply that the engine was not running steadily, but might it not be due to the same trouble as you have pointed out, of the oil on the commutator of the magneto ? This would make the reading unsteady and inaccurate. We see no reason why, if the engine was running steadily at one speed, the needle should flop about for want of dead-beatness, unless the galvanometer itself was subject to some vibration, which we suppose was not the case. We want you to test this with a suitable resistance so that when the magneto is running half the engine speed, it will give a full scale deflection of 2000 at an engine speed of 2000 and a magneto speed of 1000.
