PROPELLER SHAFT THRUST.

With reference to R5/M14.9.32.

We have been confirming our tests on a standard propeller shaft and find that a good average is 300 lbs. and thrust for 150 lbs/ft. engine torque. By our calculations this gives a µ of .166 which in view of the unit pressure of 950 lbs/sq.in. on the splines, and the fact that the material used is soft, does not seem improbable. We shall very shortly have on test the hardened splines and will issue a full report as soon as we have complete results.

It is thought that there may be some difficulty in making the female splines a good bed and hardened at the same time; possibly we shall find the hardened inner member alone to be sufficient.
