CONTINENTAL PHANTOM III.

This car has now been on test two months. Its outstanding characteristic initially was that it was too noisy and too rough. The thin gauge frame was partially responsible for this trouble, the increased horse power was another contributory factor.

Since we built this car we havehad experience on the Oldsmobile and on the Wraith with thin gauge frames. We know now that they tend to amplify road noises and engine noises.

Since this car has been on test we have concentrated our efforts on making it as smooth as a Rolls-Royce ought to be. When we were in America we were disappointed with the smoothness of the Phantom III. compared with American cars at half the price. Therefore, we probably have a higher standard to aim at now than before we went away.

Reviewing the non-standard parts fitted to this car:-

(1) Frame - Wraith thickness.
This has amplified road noises and engine noises. We have made a big improvement by working on the engine mounting, but it is doubtful whether the light frame is worth the weight it saves.

(2) Aluminium front suspension.
We have had no trouble with this.

(3) Magnesium Gearbox, Clutch pit.Bottom half.
So far these have given us no trouble.

(4) Substituting Continental Rear Road Springs for P.3.springs.
We are stiffening up the suspension all round with a view to getting better controlability. Coupled with a light frame the result is not entirely satisfactory. We are working on the suspension.
