To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to EH. c. to Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} c. to EFC. 10th. July 1918. RE "EAGLE" ELECTRICAL STARTER. X.3328. We send you herewith drawings Nos. 968/9. The former shews the main scheme of the starter, in which the gear we are at present using for hand starting has been adapted to take the electrical motor with its epicyclic reduction. LeC.969 illustrates the clearance between the motor and the final reduction gear case. The clearances shewn are less than those which will actually occur, owing to the fact that the cover on the motor has been somewhat reduced in the main scheme LeC.968. It will be necessary to mill away the control shaft boss on the motor side of the final reduction gear case, and to stop up the hole in this boss in some suitable manner. We are leaving you to deal with this point. We shall send you within the next two or three posts, a further drawing illustrating the mounting of the main switch, and its connection with the control shaft, which meshes the gear with the crankshaft. The Special/brackets you will notice will be required on each side of the engine, but the standard studs which secure the brackets are retained. For right and left hand starter, right and left hand brackets will be required. We understand that you will have in the earlier series of engines, right and left hand hand starter cases which can be utilised. contd. | ||
