When R.{Sir Henry Royce} and myself came round to see you the other night we intended to raise the question of providing a means of adding more friction to the steering on the present standard Goshawk cars. R.{Sir Henry Royce} did agree that it might be necessary to do this on the first production cars because/on those cars, the only alteration from 4-Goshawk-11 is that the front springs have 2 1/2" camber instead of 3". Also we may, of course, be able to fit the increased flexibility in the side rod.

Our tests at Derby show that adding friction actually on the pivot is far more effective than adding it by means of the Hartford shock absorber. The idea was to use several surfaces like a small disc clutch on the pivots.

We should be very pleased if you could send us a scheme as soon as possible. The first production Goshawks are now on test and others are following quickly. It has got to the point now that we cannot keep altering the parts, we have got to make the best of what we have.

We are also expecting to receive from you springs of different rating to be tried in the side steering tube with .5 movement. We are making up some experimentally ourselves. We should like to know what you consider should be the type to be tried.
