48830 To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} c. to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} SECRET. DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EV{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}2/M27.1.25. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} A.{Mr Adams} C. BODY SUBFRAME FOR 40/50. X.8380 X.8830 We send herewith N.sch.1925, shewing the revised subframe for the 40/50 to overcome the difficulty with the rear spring, and also incorporating such modifications as we have found necessary through experience. The height of the floor has been raised to 3" and the forward support moved to 12.950" from the back of the dash, namely, in line with the cross member, utilising two of the bolts of the cross member flange, otherwise this support is the same as originally shewn. We shall shortly send you designs shewing how to drop the centre rear spring anchorage .5" and the front end 1". The rear support of the frame remains unaltered except that we wish to superimpose the supporting bracket on the luggage carrier bracket as shewn to us in one of your schemes when at the Works. We may add an extra cross member at the extreme rear. This would be shewn on N.sch.1828 which is to follow almost immediately. In a previous memo, we have instructed the modifications to the existing subframe originally sent to Hoopers. Two more subframes are required for 'V' series chassis immediately, one for 'B' steering, and the other for 'C' steering both on the long chassis, and a further two will be required for short chassis and 'D' steering. We are arranging with C. to obtain the bodies which we understand Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} will require namely :- (1) Hooper double enclosed limousine 'B' steering (In hand) (2) Double enclosed cabriolet 'C' steering. (3) Double enclosed limousine 'B' steering - Barker. (4) Open car short chassis 'D' steering. (5) Open car short chassis 'D' steering. These we propose to obtain in the order herein stated. Furthermore we have asked C. to arrange to send the sports body built at Barkers, together with the dummy chassis, on which it is mounted, to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} to be ready for use as soon as the secrecy veil is lifted. We do not wish dies to be ordered for these subframes but if possible they should be made by welding, similar to the one in use on the Goshawk - GF.68. As the subframe experiments now appear to be very urgent we would like two more subframes at an early date. DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} | ||
