X4086 Messrs. Rolls Royce Ltd., Nightingale Rd., Derby. 3rd. May. 1922. Hotel de l'Ouest, Laval, France. Dear Waldron, Thanks for your letter of the 1st.inst. Presumably by now you have repaired the broken springs and are again on the road. We should like to know more about the straight-sided tyre coming off the rim - if more information can be obtained. Have you examined the tube to see whether there was already a puncture in it? It is possible that the rim may come off if the tyre is run very soft, but we cannot quite understand why the rim became detached, if there was a reasonable pressure in the tyre. There is a discussion on at present as to whether these rims are very safe, and any information you can give us would be helpful, but it should be very carefully considered first. We arrived safely in England with 5-Goshawk-11, but had two punctures on the way. We got to Rouen on the same night as we left Laval which was quite a good run. The crossing was very rough, as usual, and we did not get the car cleared from the boat until about 10-30 - there were 8 or 9 cars on the boat, and ours was the last one off. We have taken the dynamo off one of the cars here and sent it across to you. This is the last dynamo we have of this type and we do not seem to be able to make any more at present due to the labour troubles. CJ. has instructed that 5-Goshawk-11 has not be to be repaired in any way except where parts have failed due to the design. The car has to be put together again and returned to France for a further 10,000 miles. You will, no doubt, be very pleased to hear this news so that you will be able to continue your "joyful excursions"?? I should be glad if you will keep me informed as to we how you go on and the miles covered. I think it is probable that 5-Goshawk-11 will return in about a fortnights time.
