RE MINUTES OF DAILY CONFERENCE - 17TH MAY 1920. With reference to the minutes of the conference of the 17th instant regarding ordering materials in quantities to keep the machines busy, considerable care should be exercised that no material is ordered for chassis or aero engines beyond the number that it is decided to make. I believe it requires the utmost care to prevent an excess of any particular material, and work getting in front of the production chassis, the same as the great care that it necessary that no part shall prevent output by being behind the bulk of the parts to form a chassis or engine. The latter is well looked after and realised at Derby, but in the past during Mr. Nadin's days and also at Royce Ltd. in the manufacture of electromotors great loss has been made through excess of materials for certain parts being ordered and delivered in advance of other parts, and in greater quantities than is necessary for immediate consumption from a given design and the number of machines decided to be constructed. So that it appears no matter what is the state of any particular group of machines, materials should be ordered for a fixed number of cars or to employ the Works for a fixed number of months. I realise that this was well understood, but I am very anxious that in connection with our new designs there shall not be any excess of any material belonging to the old design.
