To Hd.{Mr Hayward/Mr Huddy} from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Std. c. to Br.{T. E. Bellringer - Repair Manager} c. to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} SILTING UP OF PH.III. MK.V. RADIATOR MATRICES. We have discussed this matter with Br.{T. E. Bellringer - Repair Manager} and Messervy, and have arranged that no matrix unit shall be changed unless it is ascertained by a road test that the overheating complained of is definitely due to silting up of the matrix i.e. occurs at normal speeds and not only when idling for a long period. Matrix units which are definitely silted up should in future be returned to the Repair Dept. and then Hd.{Mr Hayward/Mr Huddy} should arrange to return them to Messrs John Marston Ltd., (the matrix unit consisting of the matrix with top and bottom tanks fitted). Messrs Marstons will clean out and open all waterways (see report attached to Hd.{Mr Hayward/Mr Huddy} and Br.{T. E. Bellringer - Repair Manager}'s copies) and remove and replace the top and bottom tanks without making any charge,- they should then be instructed to return the renovated matrix units to the Repair Dept. The latter should maintain a supply of these renovated matrix units at Cricklewood as a floating replacement stock for any further silting up complaints on the first 171 cars fitted with Mk.V. matrices. Matrix units which have already been replaced by Mk.VI. units can be used as repair stock after renovation. We are arranging that Messrs Marstons will fit a small plate with R.C. stamped on it (replacement core) beneath the piece number plate on the rear of the top tank of each renovated core, so that it will always be possible to tell easily whether a core has been renovated or not. There are a number of silted up Mk.V. matrices which have been returned to this Dept. for inspection - we will send these to the Repair Dept. to commence the above replacement scheme. Whenever either a new or replacement matrix is fitted to a Ph.III. car, the steam valve should be pressure set to blow at 2½ lbs/sq.in. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Std. | ||
