20 HP. PETROL FILTRES. X.3701 X.8460

Referring to your BJ21/E21.5.26. and the choking of the 20 HP. filter every 500 miles, this of course is quite unusual. The cars would not go through their 10,000 miles trials and be such universal favourites if such a character were general.

I have forgotten at the moment what is the history of this trouble, but there is a filter in the back tank. Was it this filter in the case of Mr. Hutton's car which choked, or was it the one under the carburetter.

We are continuing to use the same system of two filters in series both in the 20 HP. and the most up-to-date Phantom, but in the case of the latter we have fitted duplicate filters and a two-level cock so as to give not only a reserve filter but also a reserve of two gallons of petrol after the main supply is exhausted. This system can be supplied on any Goshawk as soon as production permits. We should recommend its manufacture in parallel with further testing as it is very simple and desirable equipment, and has already done 8,000 miles on my car (7-EX) without I believe any of the three filters being cleaned or examined.

There is on this latest Phantom a larger filler so that the risk of overflowing during filling is much less. This also should be put on both tanks. DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} will instruct Derby.

NOTE BY DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}

It was intended to use the same pieces for the 20 HP. as on the 40/50 HP. and Derby have sent us a layout of the filler, but indicating some difficulties which we wish to investigate on an actual car.

The two level device with increased filters and sump we have aksed Derby to put into the existing 20 HP. MR tank.
