WGT c. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} 87120. EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}5/H15.12.30. RECEIVED 16 DEC 1930 re. CONTINENTAL TOURING SALOON - 26-EX. With reference to CxB/KW2.12.30. attached. I have had an opportunity of making tests of the above car in comparison with a standard complete finished Phantom II car (148-GY) which was doing its final complete car test. These tests I made in conjunction with JLE{J. Lee Evans - Chassis Test Manager}, so that we should have some knowledge of the "model" when carrying out final complete car tests on the production Continental Saloon Cars which will shortly be coming through. Comparing the two cars over the usual test route, the performance as judged by hill climbing against the clock, was practically similar weight for weight. For speed and acceleration tests 26-EX showed a slight advantage, but there was nothing much in this when equally loaded, except at higher speeds, where 26-EX had the advantage of less windage. These tests were made as far as possible by comparing the two cars side by side and avoiding the use of speedometers. Over about ¼ mile run at full throttle from 10 to 60 m.p.h. 26-EX gained about 3 yards. From our records the speedometer on 148-GY is about 2 - 3% fast, but the speedometer on 26-EX would appear to have the characteristic of increasing its percentage fast as the speed goes up. Running the two cars together, when 26-EX showed 40 m.p.h. 148-GY showed 39 m.p.h. When 26-EX was showing 50 m.p.h. 148-GY was recording 48 m.p.h. When 26-EX was showing 60 m.p.h. 148-GY was showing 56-56½ mph. According to the speedometer on 26-EX we found it possible to obtain a maximum speed of 93 m.p.h. with cutout open. This speed was reached on a slightly down grade and maintained on the level. Unfortunately, we were not able to obtain the maximum comparative speed of 148-GY, but general comparison over similar roads rather showed, according to the speedometer, that the car was 10 m.p.h. less. We were hoping to make these comparative tests on Brooklands track, which we feel is the only satisfactory way of making these speed tests, but unfortunately, Brooklands Track was not open.
