EFC. "C.111" X8793 12.6.28. LUCAS EFS MAGNETO NO.55 (Mr.Minchin) This magneto has been sent to us for examination and test by Mr. Minchin, having run approx. 20,000 miles on his late Phantom chassis. We dismantled the machine completely for the purposes of examination upon receipt from Cricklewood and found the magneto to be quite O.K. with two exceptions, e.g. the armature bearings, particularly the drive end, had worn causing slight armature end play, and the slip ring H.T. collector brush showed signs of burning, probably due to bad contact occurring due to wear. The contact breaker points made of tungsten were in good condition, the gap being .014", also the distributor track appeared in good condition. The magneto was then cleaned, reassembled and bench tested, and the electrical performance obtained was considered very good, particularly in view of the fact that tungsten contacts are fitted. Low speed sparking figures were :- Advance - 80 r.p.m. Central - 110 r.p.m. Retard - 150 r.p.m. It was observed, however, that the magneto was rather noisy when tested, possibly accentuated by the wear in the bearings.
