In assembling the universal gear box on the first Bentley 111 car, it is not desired to use the steel bushes and thrust washers now instructed for the 3rd and 2nd speed gears, but to replace them by [text 'chilled cast bronze' is struck through]. [Initials 'AH' handwritten to the right] In the case of the third speed, this can be done by substituting bronze for steel in the existing details. The adjusting washer at the rear of the third speed gear would not be suitable for production in bronze, but should be possible [text 'for one box' is struck through]. In the second speed pinion, the direction of the thrust makes the change from steel to bronze not desirable for the thrust washers and the steel washers should be retained with a bronze washer .075 thick, added by reducing the length of the pinion boss a corresponding amount. The bush will, of course, be bronze, and in both this case and the third speed bush, [text 'should have the internal annulus and extra holes for lubrication introduced on the Wraith.' is struck through].
