ORIGINAL Origin: The reduction of the electrostatic effect brought about by this means, renders the coil capable of giving a longer spark so reducing the tendency to misfire by allowing a larger gap to be used at the plugs, with the consequent advantage of increase of amplitude of current oscillation in the spark. We have shown by experiments on the bench that the effect of passing H.T. cable through earthed metal tubes is definitely to reduce the length of spark obtainable from coil.
