1256 EXPERIMENTAL DEPARTMENT. 12th April, 1941. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/CTS.{C. Trot Salt - Carburation}1/RH.{R. Hollingworth} Messrs. Wellworthy Ltd., Lymington, Hants. Attention of Mr. Woolcott. Dear Sirs, We thank you for your letter ref AJW/ET, dated 3rd April and note your remarks concerning our drawing LM.449. Before proceeding to a higher compression ratio on this type of piston, we find that we have to first improve the oil control of LM.101. For the time being therefore, we propose to forget LM.449. We have heard from Mr. Howlett, that you will be able to machine castings to LM.101 which you will receive from the Light Production Co. We shall be obliged if you will let us know how soon you can supply 12 such pistons machined to the standard Merlin final machining drawing, as already arranged. In the course of a day or two, we shall send you a revised drawing, to enable a reduced running clearance to be used. The second batch of pistons to be supplied, should be machined accordingly. Yours faithfully, for ROLLS ROYCE LIMITED, | ||
