The necessity of the circulating oil system for running in shock absorbers is felt to be paramount. Next in importance, it is felt that a rig should be built for running in shock absorbers so as to give them nearly their full working stroke. It is thought that if we can run every shock absorber on such a rig for 24 hours slowly we will get much better action, and be able to set instruments accurately on test without having to allow for further running in.

(5) The works, we believe, should be instructed to bed the H.P. valves to a good seat, in spite of the leakage provided, as leakage by the seat may easily amount to 100% of the designed leakage.

We believe that we can say that the shock absorbers are now "standard" and function properly on the 5 cars tested on Saturday (excepting of course the R.H. one on 184-FR). It is desired to get an expression of opinion from the test department as to their riding quality of the cars on finished car test. If this is still not correct, we shall try the effect of increasing the leakage time, possibly by using Mobiloil E instead of the present oil.
