Springs for B.50 Front Suspension, 800, 850, & 900 lbs.
Normal Load. Revised Normal Position.

The accompanying table gives particulars of 850 and 900 lb. springs for B.50. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/AFM.{Anthony F. Martindale} has said that both ride and steering appear to be adversely affected by the alteration to 3.50" bump and 2.50" rebound of B.50 as compared with 2.750" bump and 3.500" rebound of B.V. It was therefore agreed that future springs for B.50 should be for a normal position halfway between the two previous positions, i.e. one giving 3⅛" bump and rebound.

The springs in the accompanying table are therefore worked out to give this figure, and advantage has been taken of it in the case of the 900 lb. spring to increase the room for packing and still obtain a lower maximum stress than in the previous 900 lb. spring.

To obtain an 800 lb. spring, it is necessary to alter only the free length of the existing 800 lb. spring for B.V. FB.3826. The free length becomes 11.984" the load 1380 lbs. is required at a length 7.396" and the maximum load at length 5.621" becomes 1912 lbs. The maximum stress, uncorrected, is then 98,000 lb/in² and corrected 116,000 lb/in².

From figures supplied by Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/FWK. it seems likely that all three of these springs are likely to be required.
