186116. To Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} and Wsr. from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Cr.{Mr Cra???ster / Mr Chichester} Ey. Roy.{Sir Henry Royce} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Wst. Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}/Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} re Fog Lamps. I have now been able to make an extended trial with the Currus fog lamp and for driving in thick fog it is the best by far that I have tried. The great point about it under these conditions is the absence of glare, but its effectiveness is somewhat spoilt by the side lamps, and to get the best results the glare from these latter should be reduced as much as possible. How to accomplish this may require some little investigation but plain glasses with flat reflectors instead of lenses or concave reflectors should be beneficial in cutting out the beam effect. We have established that a good fog lamp is of no use as a pass lamp for a three lamp scheme as the pass lamp should give quite a bright light with of course a flat beam and this creates far too much glare. It is, therefore, necessary to have either a separate pass lamp or the head lamps suitably arranged for double dip or dip and switch. Whichever scheme is used we consider it essential that the illumination should be wide enough to cover the area in front of the car, as well as illuminate the left hand side of the road. We propose that the Currus is a suitable lamp to standardise after suitable further testing for mechanical strength etc. for 10,000 miles, and as it is a German made article steps should be taken to see if we cannot get some source of supply in this country.
