x7480 HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} Copy to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} re Phantom Clutches. x7480 Y7305 Y9194 Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}3/E16.9.30 RECEIVED 16 SEP 1930 I have read with great interest Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}1/MJ.15.9.30 and former memos. on the same subject. It is, as you say, Springfield who have been pushing us to change the clutch round from the point of view of the material with the fabric on the driven member instead of our present standard. The matter was brought up by Oy. at the Verrey Restaurant conference last November and reference to the Minutes says: "Oy's criticisms of the present standard clutch are accepted and we are developing the clutch on the lines they recommend, and it will be on the next 10,000 miles English chassis." Whilst I do not know exactly what impression Oy. gathered on this subject whilst he was at W., I think it is important that, as soon as we have decided what we are going to do, we should write fully to the American Company and then you can follow it up when you are there. What I really have in mind is that I rather think that we originally led them to believe that we were going to make this change and if for the reasons explained in your memo. we are not now going to do so, then I think it is important that we should explain the position quite clearly to them.
