FLYWHEEL STARTER GEAR RINGS.

The practice of forming Starter Gear Rings as a separate ring shrunk and dowelled to the flywheel is increasing.

This practice has several advantages:- A stronger and better material can be used for the teeth, replacement is easy and avoids scrapping the complete flywheel, and the rings can be more easily hand-led for gear cutting operations.

An economical method of making these rings is to form them from a rolled steel section bent into a circle and electrically butt welded. Any weldable material can be used, and a choice of high carbon and nickel steels is available. The rough blanks can be produced to within limits which require very small machining allowances.

A number of our manufacturers, who previously used drop stampings, have for some time been using the welded type of ring, and they are being supplied in large quantities at economical prices by Messrs. Holden & Hunt, Old Hill, Staffs. who have recently extended their capacity to deal with increased quantities.

Rings can be supplied in the rough, part machined, or complete with teeth cut.
