Lightened Exhaust System for 5-B-IV.

We are sending RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} a specification for the above, where the intermediate pipe, tail pipe and front and rear silencer shells are made of 16 SWG. in place of standard 14 SWG. This gives us a saving of 20% in weight on these components (approx. 5 lbs.)

Whilst this saving is but small, we do not think it advisable to cut it down still further owing to the tremendous heat which is generated and for this reason we have left all baffles and silencer end plates at 14 SWG.

With regard to the American silencers, these generally have a double shell of 19, 20 & 21 SWG. with an asbestos lining between the two shells.

The section of a Cadillac silencer which we have is made of 2. 19 SWG. shells. Taking into consideration the double shell, we should not benefit as far as weight is concerned.
